2009 Star Island Photography Retreat
September 17-20, 2009
Once again New Hampshire Society of Photographic Artists is off for four days
on Star Island, the Isles of Shoals, off New Hampshire's seacoast. This is a unique
opportunity to spend a few days on Star Island, at the historic Oceanic Hotel. We
have reserved a limited number of spaces for this weekend. Sign up ASAP. There may
be a waiting list.
Our featured speaker will be Susan Bank of Porsmouth and Philadelphia. For six
years, Susan journeyed to Cuba to photograph ten related families in a remote part
of the country. Working in black and white with her Leica, she has carefully
documented the lives of the hard working but poor farmers. In 2008 she was able to
publish a book of her work. Susan will show her images and join in a panel discussion
about working on a long term project.
Her work can be seen at
http://www.susansbank.com.
There will be photography demonstrations, lectures, portfolio showings,
entertainment, a lobster dinner and visits to other islands. Relax on the
grand porch of the nineteenth-century Oceanic or walk the rocky shoreline.
We will depart from Rye Harbor, NH, about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17th,
and return to Rye Harbor at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 20th.
None of the activities are mandatory, so you may spend all of your time
photographing or just enjoying Star during a time when only a few people will
be on the island. We'll have our own candlelight service in the Gosport Church
Saturday night, continuing a tradition hundreds of years old.
We will have our own multimedia projector so we can also show work produced
during the weekend. We will also have several digital photography presentations
for beginners and advanced. We welcome your ideas for a special program you want
to present.
We request each participant to bring 5-10 prints for sharing during evening
sessions. The goal of this weekend is to share work and ideas with others so we
want to see your photography!
The Oceanic is a nineteenth-century hotel without modern amenities. There is
no TV, baths are shared, and showers may be available. This event is held at the
end of Star's season when many of the staff have left, so the facilities are
somewhat more primitive than usual. Luggage will be delivered to the lobby only;
linen and blankets are supplied, but you will make your own bed, or you may bring
a sleeping bag. The delicious meals are served buffet style.
Almost all accommodations will be on the second floor of the hotel. Many rooms
are doubles, but some rooms also have twin beds or combinations, so that more than
two persons can share a room if requested.
There is at least one handicapped accessible room and there are several other
first floor rooms. A strictly vegetarian menu will not be available, but vegetarian
dishes are offered.
Happy hour will be observed so BYOB and goodies to share. We will have ice and
mixers.
There is no smoking in any of the buildings.
This is planned as a adult program. We do not have facilities or activities
for children.
For Star Island planning purposes and to reserve your place, we must have your
full payment by July 1, 2009.
